  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of HIV infection in the women in
  10.        Singapore and to assess the social economic impact of this disease in
  11.        these women. METHOD: Case review of women infected with HIV in
  12.        Singapore. RESULTS: The first case of a woman with HIV infection was
  13.        detected in 1986 and there has been an increasing number since 1991.
  14.        Altogether 16 cases were detected at the end of 1993. Of these, 14 of
  15.        them were infected through heterosexual transmission and most of them
  16.        were detected through contact tracing. One patient acquired the
  17.        infection through an organ transplantation overseas and the other
  18.        patient from intravenous drug use. The economic status of these women
  19.        are varied, 8 were housewives. Two had lost their HIV-infected husbands.
  20.        Eight women were working at the time of HIV detection. Five lost their
  21.        jobs because of the disease and ill health. One patient gave up her job
  22.        to look after her other ill HIV-infected family members. In addition,
  23.        the majority of the HIV-infected women received only secondary education
  24.        which makes them less competitive in getting a job. CONCLUSION: In
  25.        Singapore, we are facing with an increasing number of women infected
  26.        with HIV. The majority are economically dependent and less well
  27.        educated.
